A car’s exhaust system serves a few purposes, the most important is to control and reduce emissions from your car into the environment. The second is to reduce another kind of pollution, which is noise.
There are several ways to tell if something may be wrong with your exhaust; your car is making rattling noises, the exhaust is louder than usual, your car is producing smoke from the exhaust or, your exhaust smells odd.
However, the warning signs of a worn exhaust system are not always so obvious and no matter what anyone tells you, a problem exhaust will affect your car’s performance. That why we strongly recommend that you have your car’s exhaust system checked regularly.
During a regular service we check for leaks, damage, and deterioration to the exhaust system. If there are any problems, we will discuss them with you and can order replacement components and make repairs.
Exhaust systems – Everything you need to know and more!
The exhaust system of your car is complex. The process starts near the engine where manifolds connect to the cylinder heads and collect the gases created by the engine. These gases then travel through a series of pipes until they reach the oxygen sensors, which determine how the catalytic converter treats the gases to make them more environmentally friendly. They then travel through the muffler, which makes them quieter.
Oxygen sensors
The oxygen sensor is a small electronic device that is located in the combustion exhaust manifold of a modern vehicle engine. It is designed to detect and measure the amount of oxygen that is being expelled in the exhaust gas and send this information to the computer control unit, to tell the catalytic converter how to treat the gas.
We can add further information regarding Oxygen sensors……
Catalytic converters
The catalytic converter is designed to convert toxic gases into more environmentally friendly by-products.
Conversion of exhaust gases begins after reaching an operating temperature of approx 200 degrees Celsius. The optimum operating range is usually between 400 and 600 degrees Celsius.
Wicks Auto Tech has an experienced and qualified specialist, on site to diagnose and repair your exhaust problem. We can replace mufflers and catalytic converters, getting you back on the road with a quiet car and reduced emissions.
